The Chemical Engineer's Route Into Europe's Battery Chain: What Arkema Pierre-Bénite Actually Recruits For

Arkema announced on 19 November 2021 that it would raise Kynar PVDF capacity by 50% and open a battery-materials centre of excellence at Pierre-Bénite, south of Lyon; on 5 September 2022 it published a recruitment notice for around ten posts at that centre. Since then the same molecule family has become the subject of the French PFAS law of 27 February 2025 and of a European restriction dossier on which ECHA's scientific committees issued opinions in March 2026. That collision — a material the battery chain needs and a regulation the material must answer — is the career story. This dossier states which qualification routes are documented, which competences the regulatory record demonstrably creates, and which numbers we will not print.

I. Why one plant south of Lyon matters to a battery career

A lithium-ion electrode is a powder held together by a binder. In most European cell chemistries that binder is polyvinylidene fluoride, sold by Arkema under the Kynar name. On 19 November 2021 Arkema announced an acceleration of its battery investments, including a 50% PVDF capacity increase and a dedicated battery-materials centre of excellence at the Pierre-Bénite research site. On 5 September 2022 the company published a notice describing about ten open positions at that centre — the clearest dated evidence that the research function there is staffed as an industrial capability rather than as a laboratory hobby.

The demand signal has since been confirmed elsewhere in the group rather than at Pierre-Bénite. Arkema announced a 15% North American PVDF expansion on 26 February 2025 and confirmed its successful start-up on 23 June 2026, citing energy storage, semiconductors and data-centre growth; on 16 March 2026 it announced a further 20% Kynar expansion in China with start-up planned for 2028. Arkema does not publish a battery-materials revenue line: its results report at Specialty Materials and Primary Materials level, with FY2025 group EBITDA of €1,251 million at a 13.8% margin (Arkema, 26 February 2026) and H1 2026 Specialty Materials EBITDA of €630.4 million against €666.3 million a year earlier (Arkema, 30 July 2026). Anyone quoting a battery-segment profit figure for Arkema is inventing it.

II. The four competence blocks the record supports

Process and production engineering. Fluoropolymer production is continuous, pressurised and safety-critical. The documented French route into it is the chemical-engineering diploma with a process specialisation — CPE Lyon's génie des procédés engineering programme, including its apprenticeship variant, and ITECH Lyon's materials-chemistry diploma admitting at Bac+2, both CTI-accredited. Onisep's chemical-industry occupational guide, updated 4 November 2025, maps the same territory in job-family terms: research technician, line pilot, production supervisor.

Polymer and formulation R&D. Binder work is formulation work: molecular weight distribution, particle wetting, slurry rheology, adhesion to current collectors, electrochemical stability at the electrode. This is where a centre of excellence earns its name, and where a doctorate or a research-technician apprenticeship both have a genuine route in — Arkema states that its alternance programme covers all its métiers and all diploma levels, from vocational baccalaureate and BTS/BUT to engineer.

Environmental engineering and abatement. This is the block the regulatory record proves. Successive prefectoral orders tightened PFAS discharge prescriptions at the Oullins-Pierre-Bénite installation, most recently on 9 April 2026, and Le Progrès reported on 5 February 2025 that the site's monitoring committee had confirmed discharges halted since the end of 2024. Halting a discharge is not paperwork: it is treatment design, analytical monitoring at trace level, and continuous verification. Those are jobs. We could not find an Arkema statement quantifying how many, so we do not quantify it.

Regulatory affairs and product stewardship. The French law of 27 February 2025 introduced PFAS exposure-prevention provisions with first bans applying from 1 January 2026, and at European level ECHA's Risk Assessment Committee and Socio-Economic Analysis Committee issued opinions in March 2026 on the proposed universal PFAS restriction, with a question-and-answer note published 26 March 2026 and derogations under discussion. A materials producer facing that file needs people who can read a restriction dossier, run a substitution assessment and defend a derogation with data. This competence did not exist as a mass profession ten years ago.

III. Entry routes, ranked by what the evidence shows

Apprenticeship is the strongest documented door. Arkema described a group campaign of 250 alternance contracts across France in 2025 (Studyrama, 19 February 2025), and its careers material presents alternance as a standing route across all job families and diploma levels. We found no equivalent published 2026 target, and we do not extrapolate one.

The branch data explains why apprenticeship matters. The chemical-industry branch report published in December 2025 by the Observatoire des industries de la Chimie counts 229,000 employees across 4,362 companies, with headcount down 0.3%, hiring down — especially on permanent contracts — and alternance up 10.6%. France Chimie states the sector employs 229,000 people and recruits around 25,000 a year. Read those two facts together and the conclusion is uncomfortable but useful: the front door is narrowing while the apprenticeship door widens.

IV. The numbers we refuse to print

We searched for a primary, dated salary survey for French chemical and process engineers — a France Chimie or UIC survey, an INSEE wage series, an APEC figure with a stated methodology. We did not find one. The circulating figures, including a frequently repeated median of around €44,000, appear on aggregator sites that label them as their own estimates. We therefore publish no salary figure for these roles. A number without a method is not information; it is decoration that a reader might act on.

We also do not publish a Pierre-Bénite headcount, a job-family breakdown for the site, or any claim that the PFAS regulation created a stated number of jobs. Those figures are not in the public record we verified. Nor do we assert a named engineering school as an Arkema recruitment pipeline beyond the diplomas whose programme content matches the work.

V. Sizing the wider prize, honestly

EIT InnoEnergy's Skills Institute states that European climate goals require upskilling 18 million workers by 2050, of whom 800,000 in the battery sector, and reported on 5 December 2024 that its European Battery Academy had passed 100,000 learners trained. The first figure is a requirement estimate, not a vacancy count; the second is a delivery figure and can be checked. We could not locate an EU or French battery-specific vacancy statistic distinct from whole-chemicals data, and we say so rather than substituting the sector total.

VI. What to do with this

If you want to work inside the European battery chain and you are a chemist or a process engineer, the honest advice is to go where the constraint is. In 2026 the binding constraint on fluoropolymers is not synthesis capability; it is proving environmental performance and regulatory defensibility while holding electrode performance. Build the pair: a process or formulation competence, plus a real command of trace analytics, abatement and the PFAS regulatory file. That combination is scarce, it is documented as necessary by prefectoral orders and ECHA opinions, and it transfers to any producer facing the same restriction.
