What Separates Candidates Who Get Offers

Handshake's 2024 analysis of 500,000 student profiles and outcomes reveals the strongest predictors of receiving a full-time offer:

The graduate market is not tighter, it is more selective

Graduate hiring did not simply shrink; it re-sorted. Employers reduced speculative intake — the cohorts hired for future capacity rather than present work — while protecting positions tied to a funded workload. The effect on a candidate is counter-intuitive: total openings fell less than perceived, but the openings that remain are attached to a specific deliverable, which means the winning application demonstrates readiness to contribute rather than potential to develop.

That single shift explains most of the frustration in the market. A graduate optimising for prestige signals — grades, school ranking, a long tool list — competes in the crowded lane. A graduate optimising for evidence of contribution competes in a much thinner one, because most applicants never produce inspectable work.

The four filters an application must survive

  • Relevance. Does the application answer the job that was advertised? Generic material fails here, and it is the largest single source of rejection.
  • Evidence. Is there an artefact a reviewer can open — a project, an analysis, a written case? Claims without artefacts are discounted by default now that drafting assistance is universal.
  • Method. In interview and work sample, does the candidate structure a problem, state assumptions and test the cheapest hypothesis first?
  • Team behaviour. Can the candidate be corrected without collapsing or defending? This is assessed in every panel and named in almost none.

What actually converts in France

The structural feature of the French graduate market is that work-based routes dominate conversion. Alternance and internships function as extended assessments: the employer observes months of behaviour rather than an hour of interview, which removes almost all hiring uncertainty. A candidate who treats an internship as an audition — documenting outcomes, asking for a written appraisal, leaving behind something the team keeps using — converts at a far higher rate than one who treats it as a credential.

Two secondary levers matter more than candidates expect. Applying to the second tier of employers — mid-sized companies and suppliers rather than the most-recognised names — reduces competition per opening by an order of magnitude while offering broader early scope. And applying to the region rather than only to Paris changes the ratio again, particularly in industrial, energy and health employers whose sites are outside the capital.

A ninety-day plan from campus to offer

  1. Days 1–15: choose two role families, not eight. Write the competency list each one screens for, taken verbatim from ten real postings. Precision beats breadth because it makes everything downstream targetable.
  2. Days 16–45: build two artefacts. One analytical (a question, a method, a defensible conclusion with stated limits) and one delivered (something that works, documented). These carry the application.
  3. Days 46–60: rehearse the work sample. Practise the actual assessment format — case, exercise, debugging, brief — under time, then write your own debrief on what your method missed.
  4. Days 61–75: contact practitioners, not recruiters. A short, specific question about the work converts far better than a request for opportunities, and it produces the vocabulary that makes an application sound informed.
  5. Days 76–90: apply in volume with a fixed core. Reuse the artefacts, tailor only the first paragraph and the competency mapping. Track outcomes by stage so you can tell a targeting problem from an interview problem.

The reframing that helps most graduates: an employer is not deciding whether you are talented, but whether hiring you is a low-risk way to get work done. Every artefact, every documented outcome and every honest statement of a limit reduces their perceived risk — and that, not enthusiasm, is what turns a campus profile into a career start.
