Executive brief
Aledia hires at Champagnier, ten kilometres from Grenoble, into a facility built to 300 mm silicon conventions rather than to LED-industry conventions. That single architectural decision — documented by the company's selection of Veeco's 300 mm Propel MOCVD platform, announced 20 October 2020 — determines which competences transfer into this company and which do not. This dossier does not tell you what Aledia pays, because Aledia does not publish it and we refuse to invent it. It tells you three things that are documented: the job families the published technology and product documents necessarily imply; the one dated live vacancy we could open, a Process WET engineer at Champagnier posted 14 January 2026; and the headcount record with its conflict — 230 employees per business press for 2023 against a 240 third-party estimate for the same year, inside a registry bracket of 200–249. Nine claim families are refused in print at the end, including every salary figure and every school partnership.
I. Read the equipment, not the job board
Most career analysis of a deeptech company starts from its vacancies. Vacancies are a lagging, sparse and easily stale signal. A far better one, when a company publishes it, is the tool set — because process tooling is the least negotiable commitment a fab makes, and it dictates the skill grammar of everyone who touches the line for a decade.
Aledia published that commitment. In a release dated 20 October 2020, Veeco Instruments announced Aledia's selection of the Propel platform, described as the first 300 mm MOCVD system with an EFEM designed for advanced display applications, for microLED production. (Aledia's own site carries the same release under 21 December 2020; we print both datelines and reconcile neither.) The company's origin at CEA-Leti in Grenoble, after roughly six years of research prior to its 2011 incorporation, supplies the second half of the profile: a laboratory-derived process organisation.
From those two facts alone, a candidate can predict the hiring grammar without a single job posting. A 300 mm MOCVD line for GaN nanowires on silicon requires people fluent in silicon-fab discipline — automated material handling, contamination control, statistical process control, tool qualification and preventive maintenance at 300 mm scale — applied to a compound-semiconductor process. That intersection is small in Europe, and the Isère valley is one of the few places where both halves exist within commuting distance of one another.
II. The job families the documents imply
What follows is derived strictly from Aledia's published technology and product documentation. It is a competence map, not a staffing plan, and no headcount is attached to any row because none is published.

Two absences in that table are as instructive as its contents. First, no metrology or reliability role is documented, because the company publishes no efficiency, efficacy, gamut or lifetime figures at all — we searched and found none in any openable dated source. Second, no customer-facing engineering role is documented, because no named customer, licensee or design win exists in the public record. A candidate hoping to join a qualified, volume-shipping product organisation should verify both points directly with the company rather than infer them from the FlexiNova launch.
III. Headcount: the only growth signal, and it disagrees with itself
Because no revenue and no output figures are published, headcount is the only quantitative growth series available — and it is contested.
- 230 employees — Le Journal des Entreprises, 26 September 2023, in coverage of the €120 million raise announced 23 September 2023.
- 240 employees — a third-party market-intelligence estimate for 2023, published as an estimate, not as a company statement.
- 200–249 employees — the statutory registry bracket, which is a range and not a count.
Ten employees is a trivial difference in absolute terms and a serious one methodologically: one figure is a journalist reporting a company statement, one is a modelled estimate, one is a legal bracket. They are three different kinds of object, and averaging them would erase that distinction. We therefore state the range as reported and refuse a single headcount, a growth rate, or any projection of future hiring volume.
What the range does support is a structural observation. A company of roughly this size, operating a 300 mm line and having reached first commercial product in January 2026 — its FlexiNova launch announced 26 January 2026, after a decade its own republished retrospective describes as producing no concrete product and no revenue — is not a mass employer. It is a competence concentrator. Its labour-market importance in Isère is not the number of badges it issues; it is that it trains a small population in an intersection (compound-semiconductor process at silicon scale) that almost no other European employer can train.
IV. Why this matters more than a headcount: the transferability argument
Here is the mechanism that makes Aledia strategically relevant to a career in the Grenoble basin, and it is the opposite of the usual start-up pitch.
A specialist skill acquired at a single-product start-up is normally a career risk: if the product fails, the skill has nowhere to go. The 300 mm decision inverts that logic. Process engineering competence expressed in 300 mm silicon conventions — automation, contamination discipline, SPC, tool qualification — is the lingua franca of the surrounding industrial base: the wafer and device fabs of the Isère valley speak it natively. Wet-process engineering, epitaxy control and flip-chip transfer at micrometre scale are portable within that base in a way that a sapphire-based LED skill set would not be.
Stated plainly: the 300 mm choice de-risks the employee, not only the company. That conclusion follows from documented tooling conventions and from the composition of the regional industrial base; it does not require any forecast about microLED demand — which is fortunate, since the published forecasts for that demand range from roughly $1.23 billion to $9.94 billion to €50 billion for the same decade, depending on publisher, with no publisher stating what it counts.
V. What a candidate should actually verify
Because so much is unpublished, the honest deliverable of this dossier is a due-diligence list rather than a recommendation. Before accepting a role, ask the company — in writing — for the four things the public record does not contain:
- Qualification status of the line. Four public start dates exist for Champagnier — 2022, "courant 2023", the start-up phase being completed as of October 2024, and first commercial product in January 2026. Ask which milestone the line has actually passed today, and what "qualified" means in the company's own terms.
- Product performance data. No EQE, no lumens or watts per watt, no gamut, no lifetime figure is published. Ask for the datasheet revision that contains them, under NDA if necessary; a company confident in its emitter can share them with a process candidate.
- Commercial traction. No named customer, licensee or design win is public. Ask how many qualified customer programmes exist and at what stage.
- Compensation. No salary band for any Aledia role appears in any source we could open. Ask for the band in the offer conversation and treat any figure circulating on aggregator sites as unverified.
Two further points of local literacy. Champagnier's site is described by the regional investment agency as an announced 52,000 m² production site, built in phases — local reporting describes three buildings planned through 2025 — so a candidate should establish which building and which phase a role sits in. And on the training side, we found no formal partnership agreement between Aledia and Grenoble INP, Université Grenoble Alpes or any named school. Grenoble's semiconductor training ecosystem exists and is well documented independently; an apprenticeship or alternance route into this company is not, and should be asked about directly rather than assumed.
VI. The conclusion the evidence supports
Aledia is not, on the published record, a volume employer or a proven commercial success. It is a fifteen-year, State-co-invested, CEA-Leti-derived attempt to industrialise a physics claim, which reached its first commercial product in 2026 and whose factory speaks the tooling language of the silicon industry around it. For a process, integration or drive-electronics engineer in Isère, that combination makes it a high-learning, high-transferability, unpublished-compensation proposition — precisely the profile that rewards candidates who ask the four questions above and penalises those who read the funding headlines instead.
