Executive brief
Electrification is now a software and security problem, and Grenoble is where Schneider Electric keeps the engineering that proves it. Three dated facts frame this dossier. The group's innovation campus on the Presqu'île scientifique, IntenCity, was reported to have obtained LEED Platinum certification on 8 January 2025 (Le Dauphiné Libéré). On 5 February 2025, Schneider signed a research and innovation partnership in Grenoble with Université Grenoble Alpes, Grenoble INP - UGA and the CNRS (Grenoble INP - UGA). And on 7 October 2024 the group announced that its EcoStruxure IT DCIM software had obtained IEC 62443-4-2 SL2 cybersecurity certification (Schneider Electric / PR Newswire) — the first such claim in its industry, made under a standard that is about to stop being optional in Europe.
I. The thesis: a grid you can program is a grid you must defend
For a century, an electrical distribution business sold copper, steel and switching physics. The competency it needed was power engineering. That is no longer the business. When a medium-voltage substation carries an embedded controller, a telemetry link and a remote-configuration path, the product becomes a networked computer that happens to move megawatts — and the failure modes migrate from insulation and arcing to firmware, identity and supply chain.
The evidence for that migration is not rhetorical, it is certification paperwork. Schneider Electric announced on 7 October 2024 that its EcoStruxure IT data-centre management software had obtained IEC 62443-4-2 SL2 certification, which it described as an industry first at that level (Schneider Electric / PR Newswire, 7 October 2024). On 13 August 2025, Nozomi Networks and Schneider Electric announced what they describe as the world's first security sensor embedded directly inside remote terminal units, shipped in the SCADAPack 47xi smart RTU family (Nozomi Networks / PR Newswire, 13 August 2025). An RTU is the least glamorous object in the grid and the most exposed: putting detection inside it, rather than in a monitoring rack somewhere upstream, is an admission that the perimeter model is finished.
II. Why the regulator, not the roadmap, now sets the pace
Two European instruments turn those engineering choices into obligations with dates on them. Regulation (EU) 2024/2847, the Cyber Resilience Act, is dated 23 October 2024 in the Official Journal (EUR-Lex), and the European Commission confirmed that it entered into force on 10 December 2024 (European Commission, Shaping Europe's Digital Future, 10 December 2024). It applies horizontally to products with digital elements — which is precisely what a modern protection relay, RTU or grid controller is. Separately, Schneider's own engineering blog notes that the NIS2 Directive became effective from October 2024 and sets out how EcoStruxure IT is positioned for compliance (Schneider Electric blog, 26 September 2025).
Read those three dates together — October 2024, December 2024, and a certification announced in October 2024 — and the sequence is legible: the vendor moved roughly in step with the rule, not years ahead of it. For a career decision, that is the useful reading. Product cybersecurity in electrical equipment is not a differentiator a company can quietly defer; it is becoming a market-access condition, and market-access conditions are where durable engineering employment lives.
III. What Grenoble actually holds
Grenoble's role in this is specific and documented. IntenCity, on the Presqu'île scientifique, is described by Le Dauphiné Libéré on 8 January 2025 as the seat of the group's innovation division, in the same report that records its LEED Platinum certification. A building that publishes its own energy performance is a statement about the product line it houses: the campus is instrumented in the same way the group asks its customers to instrument themselves.
The academic coupling is the second Grenoble fact. On 5 February 2025, Schneider Electric, Université Grenoble Alpes, Grenoble INP - UGA and the CNRS announced a partnership to accelerate technological research and innovation (Grenoble INP - UGA, 5 February 2025). A framework agreement is not a hiring plan, and we do not present it as one. What it does reliably signal is where the doctoral and post-doctoral pipeline for power electronics, embedded systems and grid software is expected to run.
The third fact is vocational, and it is recent. La Tribune reported on 15 June 2026, and Le Journal des Entreprises on 22 June 2026, that Schneider Electric opened a training campus on the Grenoble Presqu'île consolidating the group's vocational lycée and its apprenticeship centre (CFA). A group that builds its own school beside its own innovation campus is telling the market that it does not expect to buy the skills it needs ready-made.
IV. The money, dated and in the right order
Investment announcements are the easiest thing to inflate, so here they are with their dates and perimeters. At the eighth Choose France summit, held at Versailles on 19 May 2025 (Le Journal des Entreprises, 19 May 2025), Schneider Electric announced more than €110 million of investment across three French factories (La Tribune, 19 May 2025; Ouest-France, 19 May 2025). On 7 August 2026, Le Revenu reported the first stone of a €100 million plant at Mâcon for medium-voltage electrical equipment. Neither figure is a Grenoble figure, and we do not borrow them for Grenoble: they establish the French industrial cadence into which the Grenoble engineering feeds.
The group scale is documented in its own filings. Schneider Electric's half-year release of 31 July 2025 reports H1 2025 revenue of €19,336 million, with Q2 Group revenue near €10 billion and Energy Management up 10% organic. Its full-year release of 26 February 2026 reports FY2025 revenue above €40 billion for the first time, with Q4 2025 at about €11 billion and Energy Management up 11% organic. Présences Grenoble reported the same +8.9% FY2025 growth on 1 June 2026, explicitly in a Grenoble frame.
V. The competency map this implies
Nothing above tells a reader what to study. Together, though, the artefacts do — because certifications and regulations describe skills more precisely than job adverts do.
Secure-by-design embedded engineering. IEC 62443-4-2 is a component standard: it asks what the device itself enforces — authenticated updates, cryptographic identity, hardening, logging. An embedded engineer who can read the standard and evidence conformance in a bootloader is doing regulated engineering, not firmware craft.
OT detection and response. Embedding a sensor in an RTU (13 August 2025) creates a discipline that barely existed a decade ago: analysts who read industrial protocol traffic, know what a legitimate setpoint change looks like on a feeder, and can distinguish a maintenance window from an intrusion.
Grid-edge software and data. EcoStruxure is a platform business, so the work is platform work: telemetry ingestion, state estimation, APIs, deployment and lifecycle across fleets of devices that live for twenty years and cannot be casually rebooted.
Compliance engineering. The Cyber Resilience Act's entry into force on 10 December 2024 creates demand for people who can convert legal text into test plans, vulnerability-handling processes and technical documentation. This is one of the few roles in the sector where a law degree and an engineering degree are equally plausible entry points.
Power engineering, still. None of this removes the physics. Medium-voltage design, protection coordination, thermal and dielectric behaviour remain the substrate; software makes them programmable, not optional.
VI. What we could not verify, and would not print
We found no dated public source establishing a Grenoble-specific headcount, salary band or hiring target for Schneider Electric, so this dossier prints none. We found no primary release attributing a specific EcoStruxure grid product launch to Grenoble engineering, so no such attribution is made — the site facts here are the campus, the certification of the building, the academic partnership and the training campus, all separately sourced. A local report describing photovoltaic canopies at the group's Eybens laboratory could not be pinned to a publication day, so it is excluded. Reported French network-investment totals for RTE and Enedis were likewise excluded for lack of a dated, deep-linked primary figure; readers should treat any grid-capex number quoted without a filing reference as unverified.
VII. The three questions to ask in an interview
First: which parts of the product line are certified to IEC 62443 today, at which security level, and who owns the gap plan for the rest? The answer separates a security programme from a security slogan. Second: how does the Cyber Resilience Act change the release process — who signs off vulnerability handling, and does that person sit in engineering or in legal? Third: for a Grenoble role, what is designed here versus integrated here? A campus can host a global platform team, a regional application team, or both, and the difference decides what a career there compounds into.
