Schneider Electric did not build a showroom in Grenoble. It rebuilt its own working conditions and then published the meter readings. IntenCity, on the Presqu'île Scientifique, completed in October 2020 with 26,000 m² of floor area (World Green Building Council case study) and a measured final-energy consumption of 37 kWh/m² per year (Ambition4Climate, Grenoble-Alpes Métropole). It holds LEED Platinum V4 certification and won an international distinction reported on 8 January 2025 (Le Dauphiné Libéré). Next door, Technopole — inaugurated 12 July 2017 inside a €120 million investment programme (La Tribune, 18 July 2017) — is the group's reference R&D centre for medium-voltage distribution. This dossier reads the campus as what it is: an industrial argument about whether electrification is now a software business, and what that means for the people it employs.
I. The consolidation nobody photographed
The story that matters started before the architecture. Since 2016, under a programme called GreenOValley, Schneider Electric set out to regroup its thirteen sites across the Grenoble conurbation (L'ESSOR Isère, July 2017). That is not a real-estate footnote. Thirteen sites means thirteen canteens, thirteen sets of lab bookings, and thirteen versions of who owns a design decision. Consolidation means the medium-voltage engineer and the embedded-software engineer meet in a corridor rather than in a change-request ticket.
Technopole came first, inaugurated on 12 July 2017 in the presence of the then research minister (Bref Eco, 18 July 2017; Place Gre'net, 14 July 2017), and presented from the outset as the group's reference R&D centre for medium-voltage electrical distribution (Présences Grenoble, 8 September 2017). La Tribune reported on 18 July 2017 that the group intended to invest €120 million in the technopôle over time. The building was designed to consume about 40% less energy and CO2 than a conventional building (L'ESSOR Isère, July 2017), and its performance file is public on Construction21, which records construction in 2016 and delivery in 2017.
IntenCity followed on the same Presqu'île Scientifique, at 160 avenue des Martyrs, with a construction/refurbishment date of 1 October 2020 and 26,000 m² of floor area recorded in the World Green Building Council case study. Schneider describes it as the flagship building of its Grenoble research and development campus.
II. The number the building is willing to be judged on
Most corporate campuses publish an ambition. This one published a meter. Final-energy consumption of 37 kWh/m² per year, with LEED Platinum V4 certification and a gold award at SIATI 2021, is recorded on Grenoble-Alpes Métropole's own climate-programme platform, not only in a Schneider brochure. Schneider's Sustainability Research Institute goes further and claims a cumulated life-cycle carbon footprint roughly five times lower than an average European building over a sixty-year horizon (Schneider Electric, 13 March 2023) — a modelled figure, and we label it as modelled rather than metered.
Two things follow for a reader who is not buying a building. First, the performance is a product demonstration: the electrical distribution, the sensors, the sensors and the software layer above them are the same components Schneider sells. Second, the demonstration is falsifiable. A company that publishes 37 kWh/m² invites anyone to arrive with a clamp meter. That is a different governance posture from a sustainability report, and it is the reason this campus belongs in a career decision rather than a brochure.
III. Why the demand is not local, and why that is the risk
The commercial pull on Grenoble's grid-edge engineering is now visibly a data-centre story. Schneider's half-year 2026 results, published 30 July 2026, report Q2 revenues of €11.5 billion, up 17% organic, with growth led by Data Center. On the same day the group upgraded its full-year target on data-centre demand (Global Banking & Finance Review, 30 July 2026), and ARC Advisory Group read the quarter as data-centre, automation and industrial-software momentum.
Read as a candidate, that is two facts in one. The demand behind the EcoStruxure and grid-edge work is real and funded. It is also concentrated in one end-market and, by geography, weighted outside France: the same half-year release records North America up 23% and China & East Asia up 20%. No source we could find quantifies Grenoble-specific R&D headcount or budget tied to that growth, so we state the linkage as commercial context and not as a Grenoble hiring commitment. Anyone told in an interview that a Grenoble team is "funded by the AI build-out" should ask which contract, in which region, and for how long.
IV. The French industrial base underneath the software story
Grenoble is the engineering brain; the hands are elsewhere in France. On 19 May 2025, at the Choose France summit, Schneider Electric announced €110 million of investment across three French plants (La Tribune, 19 May 2025). The largest share goes to Mâcon, where a site operating since 1955 and employing 640 people today will be replaced by a single 40,000 m² plant, with 150 hires from 2027 (Les Echos, 20 May 2025; France 3 Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, 19 May 2025).
This is the structural point a reader should carry away. Schneider's Grenoble campus does not stand alone as a software house; it is upstream of French factories that build the switchgear the software controls. A career here is therefore a career at the interface — and the interface is where the shortage is.
V. What we could not verify
Two claims circulate widely and neither survived sourcing. There is no dated primary release giving a single authoritative headcount for the IntenCity/Technopole campus; figures from roughly 1,700 to 5,000 circulate depending on whether one counts one building or the whole Grenoble perimeter, and we treat all of them as unverified. Likewise, a frequently quoted "20,000 collaborators across about 100 sites in France" is inconsistent with the group's own careers page, which states more than 15,000 employees across 43 sites in France; we use the company's figure and flag the larger one as unsourced. And the €120 million Technopole programme reported in July 2017 was an intention over time, not a settled outturn: we have found no later reconciliation, so it stays labelled as announced.
VI. What to do with this if you work in electrification
The Grenoble campus is a legible test of a thesis: that the value in electrical distribution has moved from the metal to the control of the metal, and that the two must now be engineered by people who can sit in the same room. If that thesis is right, the scarce profile is not the power engineer or the software engineer but the person who can hold a medium-voltage constraint and a software release cadence in one head. Everything Schneider has physically built in Grenoble since 2016 — consolidation, co-location on the Presqu'île with CEA and STMicroelectronics, the group's own lycée and apprentice training centre a few steps away, and a building that publishes its own consumption — points the same way.
