On 11 December 2025, five years after it was founded, Verkor inaugurated its first lithium-ion low-carbon battery cell gigafactory at Bourbourg, in the port of Dunkirk, under the high patronage of the President of the French Republic: 16 GWh of initial annual capacity, 1,200 direct and 3,000 indirect jobs, a target of 50 GWh by 2030, and first commercialisation planned in 2026 for the Alpine A390 (Verkor, 11 December 2025). The company that built it is headquartered in Grenoble, where the Verkor Innovation Centre runs a 5.0 pilot line commissioned in 2023, an internal training centre, and the process work that was transferred north (Verkor, 30 March 2026). Since 2020 the project has secured more than €3 billion from a mixed public-private ecosystem (Verkor, 4 August 2026). This dossier reads the three dated company releases of the ramp-up in sequence — inauguration, final validation, second line and a change of chief executive — and sets them against the risk a candidate actually assumes in this sector, which the collapse of Northvolt in March 2025 measured in public (Reuters, 12 March 2025).
I. The two-site company: why the headquarters never left Grenoble
Verkor is not a Dunkirk company with a laboratory in the Alps. It is a Grenoble company that built a factory in Dunkirk, and the distinction decides which skills each site buys. Founded in July 2020, Verkor describes itself as a European industrial company based in Grenoble, operating an industrial platform structured around two complementary sites: in Grenoble, the Verkor Innovation Centre (VIC), which houses research and development, a 5.0 pilot line commissioned in 2023 and an internal training centre; in Dunkirk, a gigafactory with a target annual capacity of 16 GWh (Verkor, 30 March 2026).
The division of labour is stated, not inferred: the VIC designs and validates battery technologies, develops future chemistries and product platforms, while the gigafactory pioneers large-scale industrialisation (Verkor, 11 December 2025). For a reader in Isère, this is the cleanest live example of the regional pattern this publication tracks — research and process engineering concentrated in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, capital-intensive volume manufacturing located elsewhere in France. It also means a Grenoble career at Verkor is a technology and transfer career, not a production career, and the two have different cycles, different metrics and different risk.
II. What was actually opened in December 2025
The inauguration release is specific, and worth reading against the temptation to treat an opening ceremony as a running factory. Verkor stated that in two years it had validated a high-performance battery cell, industrialised its processes, and transferred its innovations from the VIC in Grenoble to the Bourbourg gigafactory. It stated that the VIC pilot line operates 24/7 and has produced tens of thousands of cells, guaranteeing process reliability and initial volumes for the customer. And it stated the honest intermediate position of the plant on that day: for several months the gigafactory had been assembling modules from VIC cells, and was now manufacturing its own cells (Verkor, 11 December 2025).
That sentence is the whole industrial story in miniature. A cell plant does not switch on. It is commissioned line by line, and until its own cells pass qualification the modules leaving the building contain cells made 800 kilometres away, on a pilot line. The release also describes a digital factory: a proprietary digital architecture managing product, process and material data, for traceability and industrial performance (Verkor, 11 December 2025). Traceability is not a marketing attribute in this industry — the EU battery regulation's passport regime and any credible low-carbon claim both depend on it — but the release describes an architecture, not an audited outcome, and we treat it as such.
Independent trade coverage of the opening confirmed the headline shape and added the construction pace: an initial annual capacity of 16 GWh at the port of Dunkirk with plans to expand to 50 GWh by 2030 (electrive, 15 December 2025).
III. The money: more than €3 billion, and who is standing behind it
Verkor states that since 2020 it has secured more than €3 billion to support the construction of the Dunkirk site and the development of the Verkor Innovation Centre in Grenoble (Verkor, 11 December 2025; Verkor, 4 August 2026). The composition of that money matters more than its size, because it tells a candidate who has an interest in the plant surviving a bad quarter.
On the equity and industrial side, the named backers include Macquarie Asset Management, Meridiam, Renault Group, EQT Ventures, EIT InnoEnergy, Sibanye-Stillwater, the SPI industrial projects fund created by Bpifrance, Crédit Agricole Assurances, the Strategic Participation Fund operated by ISALT, PULSE (CMA CGM's energy fund), Airbridge Investments, EnerSys and ING Sustainable Investments. Debt came from a consortium of international banks — among them ABN AMRO, Santander, ANZ, La Banque Postale, Rabobank, ING, KfW IPEX-Bank, Mizuho, MUFG, Natixis, SMBC, Société Générale and Standard Chartered, alongside regional savings banks including Banque Populaire Auvergne Rhône Alpes and Caisse d'Epargne Rhône-Alpes. Public support came from the European Investment Bank, a Strategic Projects Guarantee implemented by Bpifrance Assurance Export, the French State under France 2030, the Hauts-de-France region, the Dunkirk urban community, the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations and ADEME (Verkor, 11 December 2025).
One regional commitment was quantified on the day by the president of the Hauts-de-France region, Xavier Bertrand: the region committed €60 million, and he added, in the same statement, that he was aware of the challenges ahead (Verkor, 11 December 2025). We print that qualifier because it was said at the ceremony by the person writing the cheque.
We do not print a split of the €3 billion between Grenoble and Dunkirk, a debt-to-equity ratio, or a subsidy-per-job figure. No document we opened establishes any of them, and each would be arithmetic dressed as fact.
IV. The ramp, in three dated releases
Read in order, the company's own communications describe a ramp that is progressing and that has taken longer to reach commercial output than the opening ceremony implied — which is the normal condition of every cell plant ever built, and exactly what a candidate should expect to walk into.
11 December 2025 — inauguration. 16 GWh initial capacity, 1,200 direct and 3,000 indirect jobs, first batteries commercialised "planned for 2026 for the Alpine A390", 50 GWh targeted by 2030. Emmanuel Macron noted this was the third gigafactory in the region; Benoit Lemaignan, then chief executive, described the milestone as opening the way "for the imminent delivery of our batteries" (Verkor, 11 December 2025).
30 March 2026 — final validation. Commissioning and line-balancing phases completed "in record time"; the gigafactory entering its final validation phase with production lines fully optimised, stabilised and running continuously; serial production expected to begin within the next few months (Verkor, 30 March 2026). Four months after the ribbon, serial production was still ahead, not behind.
4 August 2026 — second line and first on-site batteries. The company announced a new phase of large-scale industrial production "marked by the commissioning of the second production line at its Dunkirk Gigafactory and the delivery of the first batteries produced entirely on-site" (Verkor, 4 August 2026). Eight months after the inauguration, the first fully in-house batteries left the building.
That is the timeline, dated and unsmoothed. We do not state an annualised output, a yield, or a utilisation rate for 2026, because Verkor has published none.
V. Governance: what a change of chief executive means at this exact moment
Two governance moves bracket the ramp. In March 2026, Jacques Esculier — formerly chief executive and board chairman at WABCO Holdings until its sale to ZF, previously in senior roles at American Standard/Trane and AlliedSignal/Honeywell — was appointed president of Verkor's supervisory board, succeeding Bart de Beer. The board as listed then included Renault Group's procurement vice-president Jérôme Gouet, alongside representatives of InnoEnergy, Crédit Agricole Assurances/Predica, Macquarie, Meridiam and ISALT (Verkor, 30 March 2026).
Then in August 2026, Verkor announced that Laurent Debrue, deputy managing director and chief operating officer, would become president and chief executive effective 1 September 2026, with co-founder Benoit Lemaignan moving to the supervisory board as vice-chairman, where he would continue to support strategic partnerships, major financing initiatives and stakeholder engagement (Verkor, 4 August 2026). The French trade press reported the same appointment and the same effective date (Journal de l'Automobile, 19 August 2026).
Read as an organisational signal rather than a personnel note, this is a scale-up handing the wheel from its founder-financier profile to its operations profile at the precise moment volume production begins. Debrue's own framing was operational: "execute with discipline, deliver on our commitments and demonstrate Verkor's ability to perform at scale" (Verkor, 4 August 2026). Candidates should expect the internal culture that follows such a transition — cost per kWh, scrap rates, takt time and audit readiness displacing the vocabulary of a start-up.
VI. The risk this sector puts on a candidate
No honest dossier on European batteries can omit what happened to the sector's flagship. In March 2025, Northvolt filed for bankruptcy in Sweden — one of the country's largest filings, with debt of more than US$8 billion (US dollars, as reported for the Swedish filing) as of end-January (Reuters, 12 March 2025). Whatever separates Verkor's position from Northvolt's, that filing established the base rate: in this industry, capital raised is not the same as cells shipped, and a signed offtake is not a guarantee of employment.
The demand side, meanwhile, is not the problem. Global electric-vehicle battery deployment reached 1.2 TWh in 2025, an increase of almost 30% on 2024 and more than seven times the 2020 level, with EVs accounting for more than 70% of global battery deployment in 2025, down from almost 80% in 2024 as stationary storage grew faster (IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026). The European difficulty has been execution and cost against Asian incumbents, not the absence of a market.
For a reader weighing an offer, that resolves into three questions worth asking in an interview, all answerable from public facts: which line is my role attached to, and is it commissioned; is my product qualified by a named customer; and what is the financing runway beyond the next milestone. Verkor's public record answers the first two better than most European battery employers can — the Alpine A390 programme is named, the second line is announced, and the first on-site batteries have been delivered.
VII. What we refuse to claim
We publish no Verkor revenue, headcount-by-site, cell chemistry specification, energy density, cost per kWh, or carbon footprint per kWh: the company has published none of those in the documents we opened, and every figure in circulation elsewhere traces back to interviews we could not date to a primary source. We do not state that serial production is running at nominal capacity — the last dated company statement establishes a second line commissioned and first on-site batteries delivered, not 16 GWh achieved. We do not state the value or volume of the Renault Group contract. We do not attribute a share of the 1,200 direct jobs to Grenoble, because the figure was published for the gigafactory. And we do not convert the €3 billion into a per-job or per-GWh subsidy intensity.
VIII. What to watch next, with dates attached
Four public markers will settle the open questions without any need for speculation: a statement of serial production at nominal rate on line 1 and line 2; confirmation of Alpine A390 pack deliveries at series volume; any announcement moving the 50 GWh 2030 target, in either direction; and the first disclosure — regulatory or voluntary — of a verified carbon intensity per kWh, which is the claim on which the phrase "low-carbon battery" ultimately rests. Until those exist, the record is the record: a Grenoble-designed process, running in Dunkirk, on more than €3 billion, with the first fully in-house batteries delivered in the summer of 2026.
